Shimla is the easy hill holiday: a single hotel for four nights, and every day a different outing from it. The Mall and the Ridge on the first evening, Kufri and the Jakhoo temple on the second day, the Viceregal Lodge and the town's heritage on the third, and a free fourth day, with Naldehra's cedar forest and golf course as the option.

You come up by private car from Delhi or Chandigarh, or by Volvo coach if you prefer, and the same driver takes you out each day. Breakfast and dinner are at the hotel every day.

1. Day 1 Arrive, then Mall Road and the Ridge Delhi or Chandigarh to Shimla

   Up to Shimla by private car, or by Volvo coach, from Delhi or Chandigarh. Your driver takes you to the hotel to check in. In the evening, a first walk along the Mall Road, the Ridge with its view across the hills, and Christ Church. Back to the hotel for dinner and the night.

2. Day 2 Kufri, and Jakhoo on the way back Shimla, Kufri, Shimla

   After breakfast, a full day out to Kufri, the small hill station above Shimla, for the Himalayan ranges and the forest around it. The Himalayan Nature Park, subject to its timings, the viewpoints, and whatever the season offers: snow in winter, walks and rides the rest of the year. Back in Shimla, the Jakhoo Temple to Lord Hanuman on its hilltop, then the evening free for the local market. Dinner and the night at the hotel.

3. Day 3 The Viceregal Lodge and old Shimla Shimla

   Breakfast, then Shimla's heritage. The Viceregal Lodge, now the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, subject to visitor entry; the Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, subject to availability; Scandal Point and the other old buildings around the town. The afternoon is for the cafes and the shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts and woollens. Back to the hotel for the night.

4. Day 4 A free day, or Naldehra Shimla, or Shimla and Naldehra

   After breakfast the day is yours: the cafes, the souvenir shops and the walks around the town. Or take the optional outing to Naldehra, known for its golf course among cedar forest and its mountain views, with time for photographs and a nature walk where the paths allow. Back to Shimla by evening for dinner and the night.

5. Day 5 Departure Shimla to Delhi or Chandigarh

   Breakfast at the hotel, check-out, and the drive down to Chandigarh or Delhi for your onward journey.

A look at the route

Before you book

• Kufri in winter. Snow activities depend on the season and the road; Kufri is not always open for all winter sports.
• Entry permissions. The Viceregal Lodge admits visitors on its own schedule, and the Gaiety complex and the nature park depend on timings and availability on the day.
• Naldehra. The optional outing depends on road and weather conditions and is charged separately.
• Getting there. Tell us whether you are starting from Delhi or Chandigarh and whether you prefer a private car or the Volvo coach; the quotation follows that choice.
